Adams, Ernest E. ~ 83, of Hazard, passed away Monday, April 13 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was a coal miner and a U.S. Army  veteran. He was the son of the late Carva Adams and the late Odessa Mack  Adams. He is survived his wife, Pauline Adams; daughters Mary, Lisa,  Kimberly, Arvella, and Samantha; sons Brian, Shawn, and Darrell and a host of  grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, and friends. Arrangements  were handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard where the family  received friends on Thursday, April 16. The funeral service followed with Rev.  Dean Demaris officiating. Adams, Judy -54, of Lexington, passed away at the Central  Baptist Hospital in Lexington. She is survived by her sisters, Brenda  Adams and Ruth Ann Hundley, both of Lexington, Debbie and husband Doyle Caudill,  Betty and husband Darrell Newsome and Mary Lou Ashley, all of Viper; brothers  Jerry and wife Phyllis Adams of Harlan, Roger and wife Lucille Adams of  Cornettsville and Jesse and wife Lodis of Morristown, Tn. She is also survived  by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The visitation for Judy Adams  was held Saturday, November 22 at the Big Leatherwood Old Regular Baptist  Church. Akers, Dillard ~ born April 11, 1923 in Oneida, Tennessee, departed  this life on Sunday, December 21 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Medical Center  in Somerset. At the time of his passing he was 86 years, eight months and 10  days of age. By occupation he was retired from the U.S. Army, serving in  World War II. During the war, he became a Purple Heart recipient. He was also a  former city judge in Powell County and a life long member of the Hazard V.F.W.  and D.A.V. chapter #64. He was also named all state commander. He was  preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Margaret Miller Akers; son Walter  Akers and brothers Walter Akers and Demcey Akers. He is survived by his  wife, Roselee Lewis Akers of Somerset; sons Sammy Akers and wife Patty of  Somerset, Larry Akers and wife Tina Lousie of Pine Knot and Edward Akers of  Somerset; daughter Brenda Lee Dickheart and husband Dave of Fort Pierce,  Florida; brothers Willard Akers of Hazard, David Akers of Scuddy, Joseph Akers  of Scuddy and Johnny Akers of Big Creek; sister Tiny Sue Akers of Whitesburg; 11  grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and  friends.  Source: Hazard Herald 30 Dec 2008

Alfano, Margaret Begley -age 89 of Dayton, OH passed away December 11, 2008. Margaret was born September 7, 1919 in Domino, KY, daughter of the late John X. and Eve (Hignite) Begley. On August 24, 1940, Margaret married Sam Alfano. He preceded her in death on August 14, 1993. Sam and Margaret owned and operated Alfano's Market in Dayton. Mrs. Alfano is survived by her children, Phyllis (Tom) Ruffin, John (Susan) Alfano and Sam (Christine) Alfano; 8 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; many nieces, nephews and other loving friends and family members. She was preceded in death by 7 brothers and 2 sisters. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM December 16, 2008 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7700 Dog Leg Road, Dayton, OH 45414, Pastor Kurt Lammi officiating. Allen, Amy ~ 88, of Hazard, died Tuesday, December 9 at her  residence. She was the daughter of the late Austin Gayheart and the late  Nancy Grigsby Gayheart. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry  Allen, sisters Effie Jones and Gracie Feltner and brother Johnny  Gayheart. She is survived by special nephew Lloyd Gayheart and wife  Jettie; brother Arthur Gayheart and a host of nieces, nephews, family and  friends. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard  where the family received friends on Thursday, December 11. The funeral service  was at Maggard Brothers Funeral Home on Friday, December 12 with Howard Owens,  Emmitt Campbell and Bob Combs officiating. Allen, Christine -70, of Middletown, went home to  be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 24, 2008. She was born January 26, 1938  in Hazard, KY to Amos and Lettie Bell (Fugate) Holland. Christine married Johnny  Allen on December 3, 1955. She was a homemaker, a great cook and a wonderful  mother and loved Big time wrestling. She was preceded in death by her parents;  husband, Johnny Allen in 2007; son, Johnny Allen, Jr.; daughter, Roxie Allen;  sister, Wilma Dean Hicks. Christine is survived by daughters, Barbara (Dale)  Hager of Middletown, Dorothy Allen of Indiana; 4 grandchildren, Tony (Tina)  Allen, Justin Allen, Steve (Lil) Hager and Barbie (Damien) Bryant;  great-grandchildren, Tyler and Kaitlyn Hager; sisters, Imogene Drake of Dayton,  Irene Bryant, Mary (Lester) Spencer, Josephine (B.J.) Pelfrey, Maxine Sizemore,  Elaine DePlance all of Kentucky and Gracie Hardin of Michigan. Visitation will  be held Saturday, September 27, 2008 from 12:00-2:00 PM at Baker-Stevens Funeral  home. Amis, Farmer ~ 85, died February 22, 1999 at Sycamore Hospital in Miamisburg, OH. He was born in Buckhorn, KY on February 19, 1914, the son of Robert and Martha Deaton Amis. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II as a gunner's mate on the U.S.S. Roper. Mr. Amis was employed by the Miami Paper Co. in West Carrollton for more than 20 years and retired in 1976. He was a member of the Johnson United Baptist Church in Buckhorn, KY and the 60 Plus or Minus Club. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mitchell, Willie and Vernus Amis and three sisters, Callie and Bessie Riley and Nellie Deaton. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Charlene Deaton Amis; four sons, Damon Amis, and his wife, Karen, of Monroe, OH, Jerry and David Amis, both of Middletown, OH and Roger Amis, and his wife, Lisa, of Middletown; two daughters, Sharon, and her husband, William Kestermann, of Middletown, and Sheri, and husband, Mark Engert, of Blacklick, OH; a brother, Dan Amis of Buckhorn, KY; a sister, Clara Combs of Farmersville, OH; and eight grandchildren, Brian, Christopher and Brittany Amis, Amber and Ashley Engert, and Betsy, Brandy and Zachary Amis. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at the Breathitt Funeral Home in Jackson, KY.  Burial will be in Amis Cemetery in Buckhorn, KY. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Unglesby-Anderson Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second St., in Franklin, OH and also from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Breathitt Funeral Home in Jackson, KY.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the Alzheimer's Association. Applegate, Zora Williams ~ 83, of Monroe, OH died June 10, 1998 at Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. She was born on March 13, 1915, in Ary, KY, the daughter of James and Melda Williams. Mrs. Applegate came to the Middletown area in 1936. She worked as a production operator at Raymond Bag Co. and was a member of South Middletown Church of God. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Wilson Applegate, in 1972; her parents; brothers, Adam, Harrison, Taulbee, Fernando, Tommie, Mitchel and the Rev. Bill Williams; sisters, her twin, Zona Lawson Ferguson, Virgie Williams, Rushie Engle and Leona Lawson. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Cloninger officiating. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery. Armstrong, Aaron C. ~ Age 71 of Hamilton, OH passed away at University of Cincinnati Hospital on February 6, 2009. He was born in Hazard, KY on December 4, 1937 the son of Archie and Gladys (Couch) Armstrong. Aaron was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was employed at Ford Motor Company. He is survived by two sons, James (Carolyn) Armstrong and Michael Armstrong, both of Hamilton, OH; a daughter, Mary (William) Bertwell of Wilmington, MA; a brother Frank Armstrong of Hamilton; a sister Geraldine Davidson of Connersville, IN; five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Delmer Couch. Memorial Service will be held at Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, on February 19, 2009 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Asher, Mollie Combs -the widow of Blevins Asher, Jr., passed away on Friday, March 14, at the Hazard A.R.H. Medical Center.  At the time of her death, she was seventy-three years of age.  Born on January 13, 1935, at Leatherwood, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Dove Smith Combs.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church. Along with her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Donnie Shepherd, her grandchildren, Mathew Duff and Jim Shepherd, her great-grandson, Buddy Allen Shepherd and one brother and four sisters. She is survived by two sons, Carl David Asher of Evart, Michigan and Danny and wife Rebecca Asher of Happy; three daughters, Marcella Duff of Racine, Ohio, Carol Sue Brickles of Primroe, Ohio and Linda Baker of Delphia.  She is also survived by five brothers, five sisters, twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren . The family received friends on Sunday evening at The Big Leatherwood Baptist Church where the funeral service was conducted at noon on Monday, March 17, with Rev. Charles Ed Smith officiating.  The burial was at the Halcomb Cemetery at Delphia.  All arrangements were entrusted to the staff at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home.
