Kentucky ( Hartwell) pg15
This is Cynthia Melissa Hayes, his sister, and children might be from Elouisha. When Martha left she also left the Children, Alexander and Syltana, because her new husband did not want them. Jarvey and Silar reared them. He did not marry Martha If Hayes got killed in the war and Cynthia did not remarry intill 1872 then the parentage and fate of Jarvey and Mary needs to be proven. In the obits he is called father. This info is wrong. I have Ellouisa married to Fredrick W. Newsome, s/o Harrison S. & Margaret P. Lowe Newsome, marriage about 1863. This is before her Marriage or what ever to Jarvey. Kathy Hamilton midnight@lni.net Personal Home Page http://members.tripod.com/kahamilton/ Pike county record of discharge 23 Feb 1867 Lawerence county records Newsone, Harvey m. Aug 7, 1863 to Louisa Hall, by J. B. Hutchison Notes for Jarvey Newsome:
Jarvey Newsome first served in the Union Army in the Civil War. He was a Private assigned to the 39th Kentucky Infantry, Company K. He enlisted on November 16, 1862. He received his first assignment and was "mustered in" on February 16, 1863, at Peach Orchard, Kentucky. He deserted just one month later on March 28, 1963. He was subsequently court marshalled and sentenced to hard labor. He deserted again, however, on December 6, 1864. Remarkably, he this time joined a contingent of the Confederate States Army (C.S.A.) operating out of Virginia - Captain Julius Williamson's Company of Smith's Battalion, Virginia Cavalry. He is listed on the muster roll of Williamson's Company as "present for duty" on December 31, 1864. This unusual and difficult circumstance is said to have arisen mainly out of an attempt by Union commanders to combine Company K of the 39th Kentucky Infantry with other Union commands which contained black soldiers. Apparently, while these Kentucky Union veterans opposed southern secession, they were far less sympathetic to the Union view of abolition and social integration. This animosity is said to have risen to such a fever pitch that elements of the 39th at one point actually fired shots at Negro troops.
In any case, Jarvey's hiatus was short-lived. He took advantage of President Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation of March 11, 1865, which granted full amnesty to all Union deserters, and returned to Union service on April 3, 1865, having served with his erstwhile Confederate foes for about three months. He was honorably discharged from Union service at Louisville, Kentucky, on September 15, 1865, some five months after the end of the war, under Special Order 156. Hey gang, Just got a phonecall from John Wells. It was indeed the older Frederick Newsome who was CSA and he did fight at tht Battle of Middle Creek. He enlisted for 12 months and was discharged in Woffe County in Oct 1862. The younger Frederick was with the Union. Of the 4 sons of 'Frederick, Robert and Lackey stayed with the Union, although Robert did dessert and go home for a while. He served 5 months of hard time because of this. My uncle told me about the old timers remembered him coming home at night. , He did go back, was honorably discharged, and received a pension. His 2 brothers, Davenport and Jarvey desserted and joined William Smith's batallion out of VA. This group consisted mostly of the old Union 39th. They were the group that fought against the Unions where Lackey was killed. How about that? 4 brothers- 2 on each side and one was killed. I don't have all of the dates with me but I believe their father Frederick was discharged before they enlisted with the Union. As John says, since they did not have a dog in the fight their loyalties to either side did not run deep. I would probably done as they did. I would have thought more about the protection of my family and myself than idealogoly. Most seemed to be against slavery but did not care deeply one way or the other. Anyhow it is official. Notes for Cornelius Neal Osborne: Cornealius Osborne Obit Martha Tufts - Jun 18, 2003 View | Viewers | Reply to this item Categories: Osborne Obit Cornealius "Neal"Osborne, husband of Mary Hopkins Martin Osborne, passed away August 12, 1909. He was born December 27, 1828, son of Sherwood and Levisa Collier Osborne. He was preceeded in death by his first wife, Rhoda Hammond Osborne. They had five children; Siller Osborne, Hannah Hopkins, Jane Estep, Solomon Osborne, and Mack Osborne. Cornealius and Mary Osborne were the parents of seven children; Angeline Tackett, James Ellis Osborne, Roseann Caudill, Andrew Jackson Osborne, Epperson Osborne, Mary Belle Osborne, and Ella Louise Hall. Charles Hall - Jun 20, 2003 Viewers | Reply to this item Martha, I grew up in the neighbor hood with two of Cornelius Neal's grandsons. Kelly Osborne (son of Andrew Jackson Osborne) was a neighbor and Silas Hall (son of Ella Louise Osborne Hall) was the next house down form Kelly. Kelly and Silas married sisters. Kelly married Molly Osborne and Silas married Rilla Osborne. They were daughters of William J. Osborne (a grandson of Elder Sherwood Osborne) William J. Osborne's father was John Wesley Osborne (brother of Cornelius)
Martha Tufts - Jun 20, 2003 Viewers | Reply to this item Thank you Charles, for telling me about your neighbors, who are distant relatives of mine. Cornealius Osborne was my great great grandfather. His son James Ellis Osborne was my great grandfather. Where was the neighborhood you grew up in?
Charles Hall - Jun 21, 2003 Viewers | Reply to this item Martha, Elder Sherwood Osborne was my 3g-grandfather. I was born and raised on Osborne Fork of Indian Creek at the foot of the Abner Mountain on the Pike County side of the mountain. The place was listed on the map as Wales, KY. The postoffice was closed in the 70's and Wales no longer exists. The address is now Virgie. The Abner Mountain as you probably was named after Abner Caudell and Osborne Fork was named after one of the Osbornes, I am presuming it was named after Solomon Osborne. Not sure about that though. If anyone knows for sure please let me know.
>Rhoda Hollingsworth - Jun 27, 2003 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item< Siller Osborne was Rhoda Hollingsworth grandmother. She is the daughter of Mack ( Malcum ) Newsom and she remembers Siller as a short heavy set lady.
Martha Tufts - Jun 27, 2003 Viewers | Reply to this item Rhonda, I thought you might be interested in the story of what happened to two of Sillar's brothers, Solomon " Sol "and Mack Osborne. This story was told by my great aunt, Dina Osborne Hall. It was recorded in "My Family Ties" written by Emma Lou Cook Martin:
Mack Osborne went to Virginia or West Virginia, she couldn't remember which state, to visit an aunt. While there, he was shot and killed. Cornealius went to where his son was killed but didn't bring his body back to Kentucky for burial. He instead chose to bury him there. Ned Hall had been to the same place as Mack and had been shot up and run off. He wanted the man killed that beat him up, so he told "Sol" "I know who killed your brother",
He took Sol and pointed out a man who was plowing in a field and said "that's the man who killed your brother." Sol shot and killed the man and rode away. Later Sol found out it was not the man who had killed Mack. This led to a feud that got Sol killed. Sol was traveling by horseback just above Wheelwright Junction, with his son riding behind him on a horse, when suddenly Sol was shot from an ambush. Gus Little and others did the killing. Sol was shot thirty times, but his son was not hit by the bullets.

June Forwarded Message:Subj: John Reynolds Date: 3/27/2001 1:52:44 AM Eastern Standard Time From: wsgs@mis.net (FARON SPARKMAN) To: MarieD55@aol.com Dear June, Your e-mail letter of March 5th to Rick Baker concerning your great-grandfather John Reynolds was forwarded to me. Thank you for your interest in your great-grandfather's service in the Confederate Army under Ben Caudill. As you stated he first served under Caudill in Company F of the 5th Kentucky Infantry (along with his brother - Private Wesley Reynolds). After a year in the 5th Kentucky, John Reynolds re-enlisted in the 13th Kentucky (originally known as the 10th) under Colonel Ben Caudill. His brother Wesley Reynolds did not re-enlist in the 13th. Private John Reynolds served in Captain Hiram Stamper's Company A of the 13th - based on Carr. He was discharged at the end of his term in March of 1863. He appears on the 1890 Knott County Special Veterans Census. You may already be aware that our camp - the Colonel Ben E. Caudill Camp of Sons Of Confederate Veterans - was proud to place a new Confederate marker at his grave some time ago. We were taken to the grave by one of your cousins - his name escapes me right now - but he is a Reynolds who lives on Branham's Creek. He knew the location of the graves and both John and Ruth Reynolds on Reynolds Fork. We also set a Confederate marker for John's brother - Wesley - who is buried at the Reynolds Gap Cemetery at Branham's Creek. Thanks again for expressing your interest. It was truly an honor for me to take part in seeing that the Reynolds soldiers were marked and remembered for their service in the Confederate Army. Both John and Wesley Reynolds served alongside (and were no doubt very close friends) to my great-great grandfather - Sgt. John S. Sparkman under Ben Caudill. Thanks again. Sincerely, Faron Sparkman Commander Colonel Ben E. Caudill Camp Sons Of Confederate Veterans More About John Reynolds: Burial: Unknown, Reynolds Cemetary in Mallie

Notes for Mary Margaret Lowe: AKA Peggy
Because of physical proximity of the land of Harrison and Frederick Lowe in Rowan Co. and since Harrison and Peggy named a son Frederick, he seems to be the likely candidate for her father. More "circumstantial" evidence indicates that there we two Frederick Lowes in Rowan between 1763 and 1800. IF the senior Frederick is the one that came from PA, I have record of his christening there and his parents.

Queentweeny Christina Amburgey December 12, 1833 in Perry County. 25. Queentweeny Christina Amburgey, born May 17, 1811 in Wilkes Co. NC; died Abt. 1870 in Pine Top, Ky. She was the daughter of 50. John Amburgey and 51. Elizabeth Jane Hammons.
Notes for Joseph Reynolds: From "Christopher Reynolds and His Descendents", 1959 by S. F. Tillman, 3212 Cummings Lane Chevy Chase, Md Probably Rockcreek in Patrick Co Va. instead of Rockbridge VA Parents are still not 100% proven and some of the lineage may also not be correct.
The first known Reynolds is Christopher who settled in London where he and his sons engaged in trade and commerce. A study of the early English records indecate that he had a brother-Nathaniel Reynolds-also engaged with his company. A sister Dorothy, who died 21 November 1652 (sic), m. 11 August 1567 William Tilghman, son of Richard and Julian (Newman) Tilghman of County Kent. The record of the Tilghman Family is available in the DAR Library and The Library of Congress.
The name Reynolds, also spelled in America as Runnels, Runals, etc. is of Norman origin, and comes from the family of REnard. The family is of great antiquity, claiming descent from Relynolds-son of Greferth-The Dane-King of Northumberland. Greferth and his two sons were driven from England circa 944 and took shelter in Normandy. His descendant Fitzreynolds-meaning son of-returned to England with William The Conqueror.

Notes for Queentweeny Christina Amburgey: The story goes that when Joseph and Queentina moved to Kentucky there were very hard times. One of them was a day when there was no food in the house and Joseph set out with his trusty shotgun (or whatever kind of gun he used) and went hunting early in the morning. Towards dark Queentina was getting worried. She went out to gather up some wood and as she was coming back to the house there was a brown bear up on its hind legs ready to strike at her. Joseph just happened to be coming up the path at the same time and he aimed and shot the bear and guess what was for dinner? He hadn't shot a thing all day until he got almost up to his door. Queentweeny is a Latin derivitave for the 5th daughter.

40. Solomon Osborne, born December 1765 in Wilkes or Surrey Co. NC; died October 9, 1851 in Indian Creek, Pike Co., Ky. He was the son of 80. Enoch Osborn and 81. Jane Hash. He married 41. Hannah Bowling June 20, 1786 in Monygomery Co. Va or Wilkes Co NV. 41. Hannah Bowling, born 1766 in Salisbury Rowan Co. NC; died 1852 in Indian Creek, Pike Co, Ky.
Notes for Solomon Osborne: 1820 Floyd Co Census Hiram Osborn, Jesse Osborn, Salley Osborn, Sherrad Osborn, Solomon Osborn, Notes Solomon was in Floyd Co., KY in 1809; in 1820 Russell Co., VA census; 1830 & 1840 Pike Co., KY census. In 1850 census, we find Solomon living with daughter, Hannah and her husband, George Tackett. Solomon was age 82. His wife, Hannah Bolling, was a midwife and herb doctor. She and Solomon built the first house on Indian Creek in Pike Co. where Lois Halstead now lives in 1988. The cemetery where they are buried now but a plowed field. Hannah is a descendant of Pocahontas, the Indian princess. She is also known as a Melungeon. Hannah was living with her granddaughter, Mary and her husband, John McCown, and she was 84 years according to the 1850 Pike Co., KY census. One report says this couple is buried at the W. F. Tackett Cemetery, Long Fork, Pike County, KY, but I question this. A book (1950) by Jessie Warren Branne (reporduced by Rev. Gerald D. Bowlin in 1971) states there were three brothers together with their parents and probably several brother-in-laws moved fro!m Yadkin River in NC to the New River in southwest VA were regulators who fled for their lives from NC after their defeat in May 1771 by Tryon, the English governor of the Colony, at the Battle of Alamamce, which was one of the first open protestations of hearing of the rich land of the Clinch River region during Rev. War, probably about 1776, they decided to seek the wonderful country. Stephen settled on Clinch River at Osborne's Ford, named for him, now Dungannon, Scott County, VA. Stephen's wife was Comfort Lanagham, her mother a Kuykendall before her marriage to Langham. When Sol died, Hannah said that Solomon is the son of Capt. Esquire Enoch Osborne and Jane Rash which was passed down so don't know who is correct. D.A.R. says he was born Jan. 27, 1779 Grayson County, VA and one report says he was born in Dungannan, VA. One story handed down was the Sol lived on Indian Creek for 44 years before a death in the area. Use this line only as a guide as not everything has b!een proved and there seems to be some conflict in who Solomon's father was. After researching several books, D.A.R. lineage books and the Lee County, VA history book, I came to this conclussion, which is probably wrong.

Notes for Hiram Osborne: D. maybe 1 / 30 / 1892 But on with the main topic. It is known that my g-g-grandmother Lydia M. Wade, wife of Orrison B. Keesee, was Cherokee. This is not in question, but due to the way NDN's were treated then, her "link" to the Cherokee Nation was severed. My g-g-grandmother Rachel Osborne, wife of Wilburn W. Notes for Joseph Reynolds:
During a visit to Patrick Co., VA, a cousin found the following records of a lawsuit in the Patrick Co. VA records--
July, 1829 Richard Reynolds, James Reynolds and Joseph Reynolds, VS Sarah Reynolds, widow of Joseph Reynolds, deceased, Shadrack Sloan and Catharine Sloan, his wife, William Ferrell and Susanna Ferrell, his wife, ISHAM SLOAN AND POLLY SLOAN, his wife, William Reynolds, Stephen Nolin and Nancy Nolin, his wife, Laurence Slum??? and Elizabeth Slum???, his wife, children and heirs of Joseph Reynolds, deceased. -------------- I find it interesting that in all you research you never mention Hardin and Nancy Jane (COX) Reynolds marrying they are R.J. Reynolds parents. They are also Abram David Reynolds parents. They lived at Rock Spring Plantation in Patrick Co, VA. They had 16 children there. In researching Reynolds I find it strange no one ever mentions Cox's after all R J Reynolds marrys his mothers sister grandaughter,Mary Katharine Smith. Catherine Cox who married Madison Tyler Smith was her grandmother. Also R J stands for Richard Joshua Both of these names were after his grandparents because Nancy Jane Cox Reynolds parents were 1st cousins. I think people researching cox would like to know things about Reynolds but also Cox's and how they enter twine. For instance the Nancy Jane Cox Reynolds school the land there and near there was Cox land at one time. Her Grandfather Joshua and Mary Neal Cox had a home right down the road. People would like to know where her parents grandparents are buried because regardless of how little the cox's became and how big the reynolds got her line is Cox line and you would think Reynolds could keep up with her line a little better after all it is R.J.Reynolds grandparents and greatgrandparents. If anyone has info on her, her parents, grandparents I would like the info especially where they are buried. I think I know? Robin

Notes for John Amburgey: Revolutionary War soldier John Amburgey Jr. was honored July 3, 1982, when Troublesome Creek Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and Ambergey Family Association deticated a gravestone marker in Carr Fork Cemetary to his memory. John Ambergey Jr. was born in 1785 on a farm once owned by his German immigrant grandfather Conrad Amberger. The latter died about 1742 when his son John Ambergey Sr. was about twelve years old. In 1775, the Amburgey's sold their land in the rolling hills of Culpeper County, Virginia, and moved to Surrey County, North Carolina. When Wilkes County was formed from Surrey County in 1777, they found themselves in the new county. It was from here that John Amburgey Jr. enlisted in the North Carolina Centinental Line and fought in the Battle of King's Mountain and other engagements. On July 3, 1787, John Amburgey Jr. married a neighbor girl, Elizabeth Hammons. They were married for forty four years and had twelve children. Eleven of them raised large familes of their own. In 1814, most members of the family moved back to Virginia ( Russell County )and, in 1826, many of them crossed the mountains into what was Perry County, Kentucky ( now Knott County ). 7 Oct 1780, Battle of King's Mountain.- A tale often told to John's descendants: He entered service under Colonel Benjamin Cleveland and Captain Larkin Cleveland. He was present when Ferguson was taken, and present Col. Cleveland hung nine tories and Joshua Balldin escaped on Little Peder. He witnessed the hanging of Jackson Goss on old Captain John Cox's gate on the west side of the Blue Ridge. He spoke often of Charles Gordon, Witherspoon, Colonel's Allen, Martin Selby, and Sevier. He claimed to have been 'out' five or six trips, spending most of his time in search of Indians or Tories, traveling as far away as the Highwassee River, a branch of the Tennessee. Jan 1782: John Amburgey listed in the accounts of U.S. with North Carolina, War of Revolution, Book A, pages 191-208. This maybe identical to a 1778 reference. Wilkes County Tax List, 1782: Captain John Morgan's District: John Amburgey and John Amburgey (single) both listed. 3 July 1787: John Amburgey Jr. Married Elizabeth Hammons, an Uncle of the bride William Hammons, performed the ceremony. Guests included: Archlause Craft, who journeyed from Iredell County, and the parents of Elizabeth Holbrooks, nee Adams. In 1835, Elizabeth applied for a pension stating her husband had been a Revolutionary soldier and had died in Perry County, Kentucky in 1831. In her application for this she sent pages torn from a family Bible, which to this day may be seen in the National Archives file on John Amburgey. Ambrose Amburgey (24 February 1792, NC - 6 February 1875 KY) was the son of John Amburgey, Jr. and Elizabeth Hammonds. He married Rebecca Francis (22 December 1801, VA - 5 May 1875, KY)in 1819 in Russell County, VA. She was the daughter of Thomas and Jane (Hammonds) Francis. They are all buried in the Carr Fork Cemetery in Knott County, KY (Graves from various cemeteries were moved there because of a new dam.) John Amburgey, Jr. was a Rev. soldier, born in 1758 in Culpeper Co., VA. He died on 3 May 1831. Elizabeth (Hammonds/Hamons)Amburgey was born in 1759 in Surry Co., NC and died in 1857. The home of Thomas Francis (1774-1856) & Jane (Hammonds) Francis (1778-1833), built in 1817, is located at Red Fox, Knott Co., KY. He went to KY alone, settled there, built the house, then later returned to VA to get the family. My former wife is descended from two of Ambrose and Rebecca's children: Elizabeth (1835-1930) and Wiley (1823-1916). John Amberger was a name on the list of Rev. War participants. He was the grandson of the 1717 immigrant, Hanns Conrad Amberger. Conrad came from B=F6nnigheim in W=FCrttemberg where he had been born to Johann Conrad Amb= erger and Anna Magdalena Lederer. Conrad (Jr.) is described as a vine dresser o= r a worker in a vineyard. In 1714 Conrad, Jr. married the widow of Hans Geo= rg Rohleder (nee Anna Catharina Schuhnig). She was, at this time, the mother of a six year old daughter, Maria Magdalena. Two children born to Conrad, Jr. and Anna Catharina died at an early age.
There is no record in Virginia for Anna Catharina or her daughter. Conrad was settled by Lt. Gov. Spotswood at New German Town where, among other activities, the colonists were encouraged to make wine. Conrad=92s skills would have been very useful in this endeavor. Even though Spotswood sued Conrad for thirty pounds of money, he was awarded less than ten percent o= f that amount. Conrad did not move to the Robinson River Valley but lived southeast of Mt. Pony for a while where Christopher Zimmerman and Frederi= ck Kabler also lived. Apparently a son, John, was born about the time of the move to the Mt. Pony land in 1725 or 1726. At this time, it seems that Conrad=92s wife was Barbara. She was perhaps of English origin. About ten years later, Conrad moved to land in the Robinson River community though = it was on the northeast periphery. In 1742, the widow Barbara was appointed the administrix of Conrad=92s estate with Christopher Zimmerman as securi= ty. About this same time, Barbara was appointed by the Orange County Court to teach Anne Stuart the fine arts of reading, writing, and spinning.
The only known male descendant of Conrad was John who first appears in th= e records as a witness of the will of James Gillison in 1759. He frequently appears in the land records after that date. He married Anne ___ in 1750. Their children include Anne, William (perhaps), and John, Jr. who was bor= n in 1758 (from his Rev. War Pension Application). After the mother Anne died, John, Sr. was married to Margaret in 1769 when they owned land previously owned by Francis Lucas.
About 1775, the family moved to North Carolina, to land now in Wilkes County. John, Jr., the grandson of the immigrant, filed for a pension (R174) for Revolutionary War service but he was denied the pension. He sa= id that he had searched for Indians and Tories and was at the Battle of King= =92s Mountain.
A more popular spelling of the name today is Amburgey. Much of the information here came from Dorothy Amburgey Griffith who is the premier historian of the family.

Notes for Anne Sheppard-Hart: dau of Major Sheppard and Elizabeth Spencer
First, William III was b. about 1648, of course. The date I gave of Sept. 5, 1691, was his death date - I absent mindedly looked at the wrong line.
Second, I added a line in the notes for Anne Sheppard-Hart about the fact that she married George Foster after William's death in 1691 - 3 husbands altogether.
So my complete notes for Anne should now read:
'Anne Sheppard-Hart was the daughter of Elizabeth Spencer and Major Robert Sheppard. William Newsom III was her second husband. She was previously married to a Thomas Hart, apparently marrying William after the death of her first husband. She in turn married a George Foster after the death of William in 1691. Not much is presently known about Anne's parents Elizabeth and Robert, except that it has been shown that Elizabeth was a daughter of Captain William Spencer. Captain Spencer, born about 1560 in England, arrived in the "Sarah Constant" at Jamestown in 1607, co-commander (along with Captain Christopher Newport) of the ship, and one of the famous settlement's original founders (source: "Adventures of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1625"). William Spencer is said to hail from the line of the Earl of Spencer, the pedigree of Diana, the late Princess of Wales. The following is an excerpt from Encarta Encyclopedia on the settlement of early Virginia:
"Jamestown (Virginia), former village of Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America. It is located in present-day James City County, on an island in the James River, southeast of Richmond, part of the 3816-hectare (9430-acre) Colonial National Historical Park.
Jamestown was founded on May 14, 1607, by a small group led by Captain Christopher Newport, who was hired by the London Company to transport colonists. Many settlers died from famine and disease in the winter of 1609-10. The survivors were encouraged to stay in Jamestown by the arrival of new settlers and supplies the following June. In 1612 tobacco growing was started. The colony prospered and became the capital of Virginia.
In 1619 the first representative assembly in America was held here. In the same year, at Jamestown, the first black slaves were introduced into the original 13 colonies. The village was often attacked by Native Americans. In 1622, 350 colonists were killed; 500 in 1644. Colonists rebelling against the rule of Governor William Berkeley burned Jamestown in 1676 (see Bacon's Rebellion). The seat of government was moved to the Middle Plantation (now Williamsburg) in 1699, and Jamestown was deserted.
The National Park Service and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (which owns 9 hectares/23 acres of the island), have excavated and restored the area. The Jamestown Archaeological Laboratory contains relics unearthed by National Park Service excavations. Jamestown Festival Park, adjacent to the national park, has full-scale replicas of early ships and a re-creation of James Fort (1607). Pavilions depict Native American and English cultures."
