KNOTT COUNTY HALL OF FAME

Professor George Clarke

Professor George Clarke (1862-1940), came from Greenup County to practice
law in Hindman. Citizens learning of his six years teaching experience asked him
to teach their children soon after his arrival.  He selected the site and started a
school.  After lawless elements burned his school he tracked them down and had
them sent to the penitentiary.  He visited the governor at one time to get guns to
stop the feuding in the county which threatened the decent citizenry.  He taught into
the 1920's, built  school in Floyd County and was superintendent of schools in
Letcher County.  "No other man ever started with less and did more in the
educational field... he was truly one of Eastern Kentucky's greats, " wrote
historian Henry Scalf
