Uncle Solomon Everidge

Uncle Solomon Everidge  (1819-1903), an 80 year-old Hindman resident, walked 22 miles barefooted in 1899 to encourage educators Katherine Pettit and May Stone to come to the forks of Troublesome Creek and start a school.  They came the next summer, obviously impressed by the words of Everidge. According to a published account he said, "women, my name is Solomon Everidge.  Some calls me the granddaddy of Troublesome.  Sine I was a little shirt-tail boy hoeing corn on the steep hillside, I have looked up Troublesome and down Troublesome for somebody to come in and learn us something."
