KNOTT COUNTY HALL OF FAME

WILLARD SIDNEY "SPROUT" JOHNSON
1910-2000

"Sprout" Johnson played on the famous 1928 Carr Creek Basketball team, coached the Carr Creek High School team to a third place finish in the 1948 state boys' basketball tourney, and served as the assistant coach to Morton Combs in Carr Creek's 1956 state championship and 1963 Louisville Invitational Tournament (LIT) win.  Besides his extraordinary accomplishments in basketball, however, "Sprout" Johnson is known as a great teacher and citizen.

"Sprout" Remembers his 37 years in the classroom  as happy and awarding.  Although more lucrative opportunities surfaced from time to time, he did not aspire to be anything other than a classroom teacher.

For the past 20 years, "Sprout" Johnson has faithfully served his church as a Sunday school teacher and deacon.  He serves on civic committees and enjoys helping organize the annual Carr Creek Alumni reunions.

He was born to Simeon and Alice Francis Johnson at Cody.  He attended grade school and high school at Carr Creek, and received a basketball scholarship from Morehead State University that enabled him to attend college. He is the grandson of Fielding Johnson, one of the founding  fathers of Knott County.
