KNOTT COUNTY HALL OF FAME

Alice Geddes Lloyd

Alice Geddes Lloyd (1873-1962), the founder of Alice Lloyd college, was a
native of New England.  She left her wealthy family in Boston in 1916 suffering
from spinal meningitis which left her permanently crippled to come to Knott
County for health reasons.  She did not come to start a school, but began one
at Ivis (Mallie) in 1916.  She went to Caney Creek (now called Pippa Passes)
and started a school on land provided by Abisha Johnson. In 1919 the elementary
school added a high school and in 1923 a two year college was added.  The
Caney Creek Community Center she began was more than a school as it offered
out-reach programs.  She directed the school through tough and lean times.
Shortly after her death in 1962, the board of trustees of Caney Creek Junior
College named the school after Miss Lloyd.
