Arthur Pigman, born to parents Curtis and
Hattie Pigman in 1909, was a
Knott County elected official, public servant and businessman.
He was elected county court clerk for two terms in 1933and
1937, a position that both his father (elected 1918) and mother
(elected 1929) held for on term. He was later appointed to
fill the unexpired term of a county clerk in the late 1970's.
Arthur Pigman had a reputation for being honest and having high
moral character in the various positions he held and for the
way he conducted his business. After graduating from high
school, he attended business
school. He owned and operated a grocery store on Hindman's
Main Street with General Fugate, across from where Conley and
Slone's
(formerly Young's) Department Store is now located. He was a
partner in the Central Chevrolet dealership that was located in the
present city parking lot behind the Festival Stage. He worked
as the health officer at the Knott County Public Health Department. He served as the
probation and parole officer in Knott and Magoffin counties until
his retirement in the 1970's. He was a Mason for 51 years.
He rose to
the rank of sergeant while serving in Italy during World War II. He
was a Mason.
Arthur Pigman married Ellen Stahl of Louisville in 1942. Mrs.
Pigman died in June 1980. They had two sons, Richard and bob,
and three grandchildren: Stacy, Casey, and Cody. Arthur Pigman
was an honest, quiet, man of his word who made a
positive lasting impression on his community and family.
