Billy Miller Smith was born January 30, 1929, in Knott County.  His parents were W.R. Smith and Marie Webb Smith.  He attended school in Knott County and graduated from Hindman High School.  After high school, he attended Kentucky Wesleyan College and Morehead State University for a brief period but returned to Hindman and began work where his father was working and where his grandfather had worked. At nineteen, he was the youngest bank cashier in the state.

On September 28, 1955, Billy Miller married Louise Slone and settled into the life of a family man.  To this union was born four children: Stuart Gramby, Valerie Joyce, William dirk and Tracy Anne.  Three of the four followed in their father's vocational footsteps and now work to continue the family business at the Bank of Hindman.  Valerie has succeeded her father and now serves as the Bank's President.

He worked at the Bank of Hindman for over fifty years and at his death on March 14, 1999, he was President and Chairman.  Billy was twice President of the Hindman Lions Club and was on the board of Directors for both the Hindman Settlement School and Hazard Community College.

Although he never ran for any political office, he was very interested and involved in politics and was active in many political campaigns  He had a very dry sense of humor and enjoyed fishing and sports.  he is greatly missed by his family and friends.
