KNOTT COUNTY HALL OF FAME

MAY STONE

May Stone (1817-1946), was the co-founder of the Hindman Settlement School with Katherine Pettit on August 4, 1902 under the auspices of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.  The Louisville native was in Perry County around the turn of the century conducting day schools and answered the request by Solomon Everidge to come to Knott County.  Know for her boundless energy and enthusiasm, she served as the first director of the Settlement School and remained director until her death in 1946 when Elizabeth Watts assumed directorship.
