Robert "Buster" Sturgill, a
popular businessman and civic leader,
was born in 1917 to the parents of John Sturgill and Mallie Newland.
Buster was an active member of
the Knott County community. He managed a hardware store Hindman
Supply with partner Bruce
Waddell. The Sturgills eventually became the sole owners. The
store
had a special attraction for the people of the county. The
store was
full of almost anything imaginable in the hardware line, whether it
was an item from days gone by or something that he had just
received.
Buster always knew the location of the needed item and would sell it
at the marked price even if the value had increased. Folks
were sure of
his honesty and sure of easy credit if it was needed. Many
people had running accounts at Buster's. Trusting his
fellowman and being accommodating to everyone epitomized the life of
Buster Sturgill.
Those characteristics served this county well, making him a positive
role model in the community and leaving a lasting impact in Knott
County. Corbett Mullins
