KNOTT COUNTY HALL OF FAME

JOHN DANIEL TERRY

John Daniel Terry was born October 24, 1948, to the parents of Bethel and Arda Lou Robinson Terry of Lackey, Kentucky.  Danny joined his brother Bill in a home filled with love as his father worked as a superintendent for Inland Gas Company

When it came time for Danny to go to school, he enrolled in Four Mile Grade School and later would attend Porter Elementary due to school consolidation.  After grade school, he entered Hindman High School and graduated from there in 1966.  Upon completion of high school, he enrolled in Alice Lloyd College and later at Morehead State University.  It was about his time Danny realized his vocational calling and entered the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in Louisville.  As he continued in mortuary school, Danny spent his weekend, summer and vacations back in Hindman working at the Hindman Funeral home.  Upon graduation for mortuary school, Danny returned to Knott County and assumed a full time position at the Hindman Funeral Home.

In 1971, Danny married Linda Watts and continued to work in the funeral home business while building a home for heir two children, Mardy and Stacy.

As Danny continued to work with and for the people of Knott County, he realized for sure the funeral home business was to be his life's work.  In 1972, he became a partner in the Hindman Monument Company.  By 1990, he would become sole owner of the Hindman Funeral Services.

In the middle 1980's, a vision of a new funeral home formed in Danny's mind.  In July of 1986, ground was broken on the Hindman Services building.  The work went quick and by October 1986, he conducted the first funeral in the new facility.

During his 32 years in the funeral home business, Danny has continued to balance his life between his family and community and civic service.  He has served two terms as President of the Hindman City Council and a member of Hindman Masonic Lodge 689.  From 1986 through 1990, Danny also served the county as coroner.

It was also during the growing period. Danny's interest turned to bluegrass and gospel music. Growing out of his love of music was the musical group "Danny Terry and Friends" and numerous performances around the area as well as three tapes that were well received by music lovers.

To Danny's credit, his other business endeavors include Borderline Fence Company, former ownership of Hindman Floral and his most recent venture Mountain Memory Gardens, a beautiful perpetual care cemetery located just below the town of Hindman.

Like his mentor, John Everage, Danny Terry possesses the personality and wisdom to be successful in his chosen vocation.  Over the last 32 years, he has been with and comforted many families of this area during some of their most trying times.  It takes a special person to do what Danny has done with this life and to dedicate himself to his work and to the people of Knott and Surrounding counties.  Numerous families and individuals will always hold a special place in their hearts for Danny and the comfort he continues to bring to them.
