HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT

Two men died Friday (24 Oct. 2003) in a one-car wreck east of Beattyville when the car in which they were riding took a hard right, flew down a 6-foot embankment and smashed into a tree.

Dead are the driver, Freddy Campbell, 38, of Jackson and his passenger, Granville Turner Jr., 52, of Athol. The accident happened 4 miles east of Beattyville on Ky. 52, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Department, which continues to investigate the crash.

Both men were wearing seat belts but not properly, officials said. The 1993 Ford Escort station wagon had automatic seat belts which the men had tucked under the arms, a move that contributed to their massive internal injuries, said a deputy sheriff investigating the accident.

Funeral services for Turner will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Watts Funeral Home in Jackson, with visitation tonight at 6. Services had yet to be scheduled for Campbell.
