Breathitt World War Hero Found Dead
Jackson Times - Jan. 22, 1926

Green Combs, son of Benjamin Combs, of Ned, but who lived at the time in Perry county was found dying, with a bullet wound in his abdomen, Sunday morning.  Young Combs was one of the first    volunteers to enter the World War from Breathitt, was trained at Camp Gordon, Georgia, and sailed for France among the first contingent of men to go over there.

He distinguished himself in the battles of Chatteau Thierry and the Argonne.  He was twice wounded, and gassed.  He returned home after the Armistice was signed but he has never been well, and suffered much from the effects of his injuries, received in the World War.

Sunday, Jan. 10th, at his home in Perry county, his wife after hearing a shot, ran to his room to find him prostate on the floor with a bullet wound in his abdomen.  The ball seemed to have lodged in the spinal column, death came before medical aid could be summoned.  Young Combs never regained consciousness.  At the time of his death there was no one there except his wife, they
having no children.  His parents and friends were soon notified but the end had come before any of his people reached him.  Funeral was held at the home of his father and he was buried in the family graveyard near the home of his childhood.
