FIFTEEN ARE KILLED WHEN KENTUCKY GOES TO POLLS
  ---------------
REPORT OF FIVE MORE SLAYINGS IN TWO COUNTIES ADD TO EARLY TOTAL OF
ELECTION DAY SLAYINGS

Prestonsburg, Ky., ---(AP) - Reports of five election day killings in
FLOYD and KNOTT COUNTIES were received here today, bringing to 15 the
number of such killings in KENTUCKY.

Two men were slain, another probably fatally stabbed and three others
were wounded slightly in FLOYD COUNTY.

ARTHUR THOMPSON, who was shot here Tuesday afternoon, died early today
in a MARTIN hospital.   Officers were told his alleged assault, CLYDE
CLARK, nephew of a candidate for magistrate, was coming in to give
himself up.   CLARK, the officers said, was severely beaten and THOMPSON'S
brother, WILLIS RAY THOMPSON, was wounded slightly.   One version of the
fight was that the men quarreled over an old bet, while another was
that they fought after one of them was struck accidentally with a cue
stick in a pool game.   Officers said they did not believe the shooting was
connected with the election.
