ARRESTED FOR
MURDER AFTER NEARLY TEN YEARS
THE SLAYER OF A GOVERNMENT AGENT IS APPREHENDED
Louisville, Ky., Oct 10—Telegrams were received at
the Federal building announcing the arrest in the
mountains between Kentucky and Virginia of Samuel Sloan
and Samuel Adams, the alleged murderers of Deputy United
Sates Marshall Wireman. These men are alleged to be the
real murderers, though Randall Adams and Ike Sloan are
now serving life terms in the penitentiary for
complicity in the murder The murder of Wireman was the
result of a battle, Wireman, Hollifield and a posse were
sent to Knott County in March, 1889 to arrest the
Adamses, Sloan and two of the Pilgrim brothers for
illicit distilling. There were five men in the posse;
two remained behind to hold the horses. When Randall
Adams house was neared Adams and his friends rushed out
and the battle was fought in an apple orchard. It was
three against a dozen. Wireman was killed but before the
battle was ended Arch Madden of the moonshine gang was
killed and Ike Sloan was wounded. Since then search has
been made for the murderers. Randall Adams and Ike Sloan
were convicted last year.
