Adkins, Flossie A Kendrick --There are sad and empty hearts among the family and friends of Flossie D. Adkins. I will attempt to
write this obituary of my mother's life, with love and admiration for the woman who taught me about life and her faith in Jesus Christ. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pikeville Old Regular Baptist Church. Our family loss is Heaven's gain, and we will have to be consoled with the cherished memories of our mother. She had been sick for many years with heart and kidney problems.  On Thursday August 3, 2000 she died at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington after having heart surgery. She is buried on the Annie Young Cemetery, in Pikeville, Kentucky.  Flossie D. Kendrick was born January 1, 1941 to the late James "Bud" Martin Kendrick and Alpha (Adkins) Kendrick. She was their only daughter. She had two half-sisters Linda Kendrick Slone and Christine Kendrick Slone. She also had one half-brother, Lloyd D. Adkins. Flossie Kendrick was married to our father Harold L. Adkins for forty-three years. They were blessed with three children; Wanda Faye (Stump), James Lloyd Adkins, and Brenda Kay (Bevins). They also were blessed with five grandchildren ; James Lee Adkins, Joshua Charles Adkins, Katherine Kay Bevins, Robert Blake Bevins and Jessica Leann Stump. Our mother's love and devotion will always be sadly missed by her family and friends.  Written with love by her family.

Akers, Berry-- With cherished memories of our beloved dad, Berry Akers these words have been written with love and the utmost respect. The son of the late Andy and Polly Frasure Akers, Dad was born October 18, 1909 at Grethel and passed this life to join his heavenly Father November 23, 2001, making his earthly visit 92 years, one month and five days. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lexie Hall Akers, and precious little son Donald Ray Akers.   Dad and Mom were blessed with 7 children: Hershel Akers of Amherst, Oh; Jurlene Hall of Collins, Oh; Charles Akers of Vermilion, Oh; Shirley Hamilton of Grethel, Ky; Janice Murphy Connor of Huron, Oh; Shadkick "Buddy" Akers of New London, Oh; Donald Ray Akers deceased. 21 grandchildren 35 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Dad was extremely proud of each of his children and grandchildren. One of the most joyous occasions for him was when he expected a visit from any of them. Whistling, he anxiously paved the floor, the curtains always rumpled from his constant peeking out the window until his loved ones arrived.    Dad's memories were filled with truthful and sometimes very humorous stories of his experiences throughout the turn of the century. Visitors old and young took great pleasure in listening as Dad shared his stories. Visitors and telephone calls would come from various parts of our nation from folks asking Dad for information regarding their ancestors and heritage. Dad was pleased to be of help to them. Dad was a faithful member of the Pilgrim Home Regular Baptist Church at Grethel, Ky. There he served as deacon. He took his Christian responsibilities very seriously, visiting the sick and praying for the needy. Dad was always a good neighbor and friend to everyone. He was loved by all and all expressed their love for him. Dad was a faithful husband and loving father, a retired coal miner and construction worker. He lived by the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Dad developed lung and heart problems several years before his death. This condition left him very weak and rapidly progressed. He was no longer able to stay along or care for himself. He was hurt so bad that he could no longer attend church, but one thing we can say, Dad had so many good and faithful friends who came to visit him. We are so grateful to everyone for making his last days filled with joy. Brothers and Sisters of the church gathered in and had a special service in observance of communion and foot washing for him. Dad expressed how much he appreciated and how many blessings he received during this beautiful time of worship. and time spent with friends. Dad is missed by many. We miss Sad and Mom so much. Nothing is the same anymore. But we truly believe together they're in heaven, rejoicing and free from all sickness and pain. Dad we miss you very much.  Love, your children

Allen, Sarah Jane Hyden--Sarah Jane Hyden Allen was born at Alphoretta, Ky on Feb 14, 1907.She was the daughter of the late Stewart Hyden and Julia Prater. She grew  up on Stephens Branch and in 1921 at the age of 14 she was married to Ula Allen. Aunt Sarah and Uncle Ula became the parents of five children: Edgel Allen who is deceased; Juanita Hawkins of Sidney, Oh; Agnes Vanhoose Riverview Nursing Home, Prestonsburg, KY; Billy M.. Allen Langley, Ky; and Charles Ray Amburgey Weatherford, Texas; She is survived by one sister Bessie Gibson of Wayland, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband Uncle Ula, and son Edgel; two sisters: Lude Hyden and Bertha Gibson; and her only brother James (Jimmy) Hyden. She was called Mamaw by nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, and she was called Aunt Sarah by a host of nieces and nephews. Aunt Sarah was a lady who could do most anything. She could do carpentry work, could paper, paint, raise a garden and hoe corn. She was also an excellent seamstress. She not only sewed pretty dresses and skirts, she made the first pair of overalls I ever wore. When Uncle Ula became unable to drive, she learned to drive when she was in her mid 60's. Several years ago Mom and I were visiting with her when they both lived in Maytown.). It was just after Uncle Ballard Prater funeral and I  had done this for him. I had a little trouble coming up with the actual time he had joined the church. Aunt Sarah asked me if I would do this at her funeral and I had promised I would if I was still here.    She wanted to make sure I remembered when she joined the church and she made me write it down. The only thing I could find to write on was a piece of envelope. I wrote it down and put it in my billfold. I didn't need it until today. She joined and was baptized at the Bethel Church on the 4thSaturday and Sunday in October 1930, seventy-one years ago this past month. I don't know whether that is a record for this church, but it has to be close. She loved her God and she loved her church. She filled her seat every Sunday that she possibly could, as long as she was able. She was a fine singer. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing the old  songs. Someone mentioned the other night about her shouting. She didn't shout a lot in fact I have actually seen her fight it or at least it seemed that way to me. She would sit there and start to get up then would sit back. She would do this a few times, all the time clapping her hands when it seemed she couldn't hold it any longer and up from there she would come. You could feel the spirit of the lord in her. It was a beautiful sight to behold. She hadn't been able to do that for awhile as she had been in the Riverview Nursing Home for several years. but this past Monday morning she relived the end of a dream that she had been dreaming for a long, long time. She went to be with her Savior.  Written by her Nephew J. G. Gibson

Bailey, Edna Mae Adkins  - was born June 10, 1920 to the late Robert Adkins and Gracie (Ratliff) Adkins. Three sisters all preceded me in death. Ocie Ratliff, Effie Adkins, Thelma Frasure. I married Lacy Bailey Jan 18, 1940. To this union one child was born. Effie Lois (Bailey) Bond; two grandchildren, Angelia Diann Scott, and Derek Vincent Click, five grandchildren: William Brandon Click, Corey Matthew Click, Chelsea Breann Click, Hueysville, Ky. Logan Reed Scott and Mackenzie Paige Scott, Garrett; one step-grandson Peter Bond of Atlanta, Ga; two step great-grandsons Christopher and Michael Bond of Ft. Myers, Florida.   I joined Bethel Old Regular Baptist Church Jan 4th, Sunday 1967. I was baptized the same day by Bro Burton Howard. While I was going to the stand a warm breeze was lifting me and carrying me. I felt so light. The spirit of the Lord was helping me to the stand. I have never saw a day I would make a change. I never saw a time I wanted to turn back. I just wanted to march on in the good old fashion way.   I've been completely satisfied. I love the old Regular Baptist Church and all my brothers and sisters. I also love people in general. I lovechildren. I've taken care of a bunch of children. There sometimes were20 0r 30 at one time playing in my yard when I lived at Maytown. I'd take care of them as if they were my own. I would feed them popcorn by the dish pan full. The happiest days of my life are the days I spent in this old church. What a wonderful church family to be part of. I am an old Regular Baptist from the top of my head, to the sole of my feet. Thank God forever! I lived a full life. I've also had troubles and sorrows but with the help of God, I overcame the hurt and disappointment. Thank God, He gave me a forgiving heart. I am so thankful I forgave them all.

Baldwin, Ethel Newsome  My beautiful and loving grandmother Ethel (Newsome) Baldwin was born February 20, 1917 to Noah and Rebecca (Kiser) Newsome at Caney Creek, Pike County, Kentucky. She was the oldest daughter and the second eldest child born to this union. During her years growing up in her parent's home, she helped in the raising of her younger siblings, as well as working in the fields, cooking and cleaning at the home place. As a young woman she meet Hamilton of Mud Creek Floyd County, Ky at a church revival, and in 1934they married and she moved to Mud Creek with her new husband. To this union five children were born. Thomas Eugene in 1935,Beckie Jane in 1937, Jewel Dean in 1942, Pauline in 1945, and Alpha Jean in 1947. Unfortunately for this young family, the Lord had his own plan for Harold and in 1947 Mamaw Ethel was left a young widow forced to raise her five young ones along. She moved back to Booker Fork, Pike Co, Ky, to be closer to her family and in 1949 tragedy once again struck this young family with the passing of the youngest child Alpha Jean at just 18 months of age. Mamaw was a strong woman, but she struggled to raise her surviving four children during hard and trying times. I know this was difficult for her at times, but she had a strong will and a love of God, so she continued to move ahead. In 1956 she married Phinnes Smallwood and moved with him near Paintsville, Ky. From this marriage she acquired four wonderful stepchildren, but again found herself a widow in 1960 with the passing of Phinnes. Thankfully this period of widowhood was relatively short, for in 1962 she was introduced to a kindly, gentle Widower and in September of that year she became the bride of Mr. Worley Baldwin. From this marriage Mamaw gained four additional stepdaughters. As time went on Mamaw was gifted with thirteen grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren. All of these grandchildren and most of the step grandchildren have special memories of times spent at the loving home of these grandparents sharing stories, soft hugs, warm kisses and the delicious smells and tastes of the wonderful foods made by both grandparents. These grandchildren in turn presented Mamaw with twenty-three great-grandchildren a number of step great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mamaw Ethel and Papaw Worley shared a warm and loving union until his death in 1981. She said she could never replace his love or him, so she remained a widow the remainder of her life. They both shared a deep faith and love for the Lord and in 1979 Mamaw was baptized at the Caney Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. She deeply loved attending services and sharing fellowship with her brothers and sisters in the church. Although in recent years her health had kept her from attending services regularly, she continued to hold strong faith and firm belief in the Almighty. Tragedy was yet again to strike Mamaw's soul in 1994 with the passing of her middle daughter, Jewel Dean Slone. Mama never quite recovered from her passing and often stated that she hoped the Lord would spare her from such a loss again in her lifetime. And this in fact was his plan for on October 3, 2001 at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, Mama quietly slipped away to join His Kingdom after a battle with cancer and heart problems was too strong for her now frail body. She left to mourn her passing her son Thomas Hamilton and his wife Irene of Springport, Michigan; two daughters. Beckie Jane Sawyers and her Husband, Eugene of Rising Sun, Maryland; Pauline Hamilton and her husband Hassel of Booker Fork, Pike Co, KY; son's-in-law, Lawrence Slone of Gainesville, Florida; jour step-daughters Bethel Stafford of Staffordsville, Ky, Mary Tackett of Dorton, Ky, Marie Amadio of Jackson, Mi, and Virginia Kilgore of Jackson, Mi; five brothers Edward, Luther, and Vernon Newsome of Ohio, James Newsome of Booker Fork, Pike Co, Ky and Jesse Newsome of Penny Rd, Pike Co, Ky, two sisters Edna Hamilton of Teaberry, Ky, and Ruth White of Fremont Ohio; thirteen grandchildren; Michael, Marcus, Sandra, Sheila, Danny, Patti, Gene, Roger, Greg, Jennifer, Thomas, Bonnie and Timothy; numerous step-grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren a number of step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, Dakodah and Baileigh Proteau of Michigan.    Mama was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Susan, one brother Lonzo Newsome and two sisters Dixie Hamilton and Hazel Collier. Since Mamaw's passing her son-in-law Eugene Sawyers lost his battle with cancer and she was once again given the gift of an additional great-granddaughter Michaela. She often stated that I and my cousin Jennie were her "Angels" but we all know that the truth was that Mama was all of our Guardian Angel and she continues to watch over us in our daily lives. We all loved her so much and miss her presence in our midst. Until we meet again Mama I love you and you are never far from my thoughts and always in my heart.
Written with much love and deep grief by her granddaughter Sheila Hamilton.

Baldridge, Emogene Blackburn -With much prayer, I will try to write the obituary of my mother and sister in Christ. My mother was born in Pike county, Ky on May 23, 1920 to Agnes and French Blackburn, who preceded her in death. Also mother later lived in Floyd County Ky and finished this life on the earth Jan 24, 2001 in the Kingsport, Tennessee area. She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church for about sixty years. My mother lived life with the songs of the Lord and with prayer. Often mother would faith doctor on people and when they came to thank her, she would explain that if they were healed God had done the work and not herself. There were five of us children, and mother would leave walking with us to church; sometimes church would be a long way from home. She would say Pray for a ride children, and we never failed to get to the church house, always on time for the old songs of Zion, and we got home with no problems. Blessed with the spirit, you could hear my little mother shouting clear outside the church house. Mother loved her children and loved her brothers and sisters in the church, but more than this she loved sinner men and women. Mother was preceded in death by her husband the late Orville Baldridge Sr, and she left behind three sisters: Mary Jane Varney of Michigan, and Anna Grace White and Willa Marie Potter, both of Kentucky; a brother William French Blackburn, of Forest Hills, Kentucky; two sisters-in-laws Thelma Ruth Davis and Pauline Baldridge; five children; Thelma Bear of Greeley Co, Christine Burns of Eustis, Fla; Orville Baldridge Jr of Casselberry, Fla, Daniel Bald-ridge of Apopka, Fla; and Stephen Baldridge of Bluff City Tennessee,15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren a great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Bates, Verna Wright -With the help of our great God and by his great mercy that he bestows upon us and gives us the courage to continue
on after he has called our loved ones home to Heaven, I will try to write an obituary of my dear beloved wife Verna Wright Bates. She was the daughter of the late Willie and Ardelia Sanders Wright. Born January 27, 1926 at Millstone, Kentucky and died October 10, 2001 at Muncie, Indiana making her stay on God's great earth 75 years 8 months and 13 days. Verna was married for 56 years 6 months and 23 days to Elder Greeley Bates. We were married March 17, 1945. We were blessed with 11 children, 2 of whom preceded her in death. Jimmy died at the age of 19 from injuries due to a car accident-dent and Tommy died at the age of 39 from colon cancer. Both of these children left us with the hope of meeting them in Heaven. Left to mourn their loss are 5 boys and 4 girls; Paul of Nashville, Johnny of Portland, Danny of Modoc, Greeley Jr, Charles, Geneva Walker, Dewana Feltis, Delana Sexton, and June Hall of Winchester, All live in Indiana. She also left 23 grandchildren an 25 great-grand-children. Two sisters and two brothers, are also left behind, Fleda Davis of Sparta Tennessee, Sarah Webb of Goshen, Ohio, Dewey Wright of Stanton, Ky and Sherman Wright of West Liberty, Ky. Also many relatives, friends and a great host of brothers and sisters of the Old Regular Baptist Church. Elder Andy Bates baptized Verna in 1952 at the Tolson Creek Church. She moved her letter to Little Memory Church at Milan, In  January 1993. Then she moved it to New Home Church at Mohawk Indiana in April 1993. So we were members of the same church. We all miss Verna very much, but we keep her alive in all our lives through memories. We keep her alive to her grandchildren and other family members. This is very important to keep everyone close and to pass the love on throughout the coming generations. God blessed us with her special love. The human side of us is still very sad and lost without her but we thank God for blessing her throughout her life and being there for her in her last moments to give her comfort and to take her home to glory and everlasting rest.  Written by Elder Greeley Bates.

Bentley, Bruce -was born October 21, 1918 to Irvin and Curl Vance Bentley. Bruce left home at an early age to join what was then CCC. in 1939he joined the army where he rose to the rank of First Sergeant. Bruce was stationed in Iceland until the outbreak of WWII. Then he served in Europe until his discharge in 1945. After his discharge from the army Bruce met and married Velma Truman.  Bruce and Velma had four children; Russell, Karen, Denise, and Vivian. Bruce strove to teach his children decency and honesty. Bruce and Velma had eight grandchildren that were Bruce's pride and joy. They also have three great grandchildren. Bruce joined the Old Regular Baptist Church in 1954. In 1953 Bruce sustained a broken back as a result of a mining accident, that caused him many surgeries and problems for the rest of his life. Bruce and Velma operated a retail grocery from 1955 to1988. Bruce was never able to do strenuous work because of his injury. He had surgeries for other problems, including the final one for heart surgery in October 1994. Two days later he suffered a stroke, which left him paralyzed on the right side. He had many complications from the stroke and many times we were told that he was dying. God always brought him through until December 23, 2001, God decided he had suffered enough. The family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. Written by his wife, Velma Bentley.

Bentley, Gladys  -With sweet and loving memories and much sadness in our hearts we write in the honor of our beloved mamaw Gladys Kiser Bentley. Gladys was born May 10, 1924 to Emery and Tilda Kiser of Teaberry, Ky. The fourth of seven children, she grew up to be a beautiful young woman with a radiant smile, a smile that charmed a young Willie Bentley. They were married in December 1940.   From their union were born eleven wonderful children; Arlene Hamilton, and Troy who preceded her in death, Gretho of Ezel, Ky Louellen Martin of Craynor, Ky, Arthur of River Rouge Mi, David of Romulus, Mi, Lois Newman of Hi Hat, Ky, Billy of Beaver, Ky Randy of Toler, Ky, Frank of Harold, Ky and Ollie Hank of New London, Oh. She also has two brothers living Ollie and Delmar Kiser. They struggled through hard times, with the help of the Lord and a lot of love instilled in her children. along with strong family values and her own great sense of humor. Even in sad times, mamaw could always make us smile. Her family grew to include twenty grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and months  be-fore her passing, she welcomed her first great-great-granddaughter to this world. Mama joined the Samaria Church on December 12, 1971. We will always remember hearing her sing those old church songs that she loved so much. The Lord took her on December 26. We spent Christmas Day at her side showering her with love. Hours before she passed, she found the strength to raise her hands and begin praising the Lord. We waited and watched as she grew weaker. She held on until Christmas was over and at 1:30 am, with most of her family at her side she took her last breath. In our hearts it helps to know that mamaw is in Heaven with Papaw, her parents her children and her grandchildren Glora Gay and Stephen. We all know how much we missed them. We will miss her deeply but will always have happy memories of her. We love you Mom, Mama and sister.
Written by her loving family, who will miss her so much.

Hall, Carlista J. -With the help of the good Lord, we will try to write an obituary of our dear sweet mother, Carlista J. Hall. Mammy was born March 7, 1915 to Sonny and Carlista Jones. She departed this life on November 21, 2001 at the age of 86...years 8 months and 14 days. Early in life Mommy met and married our Dad Ballard Hall, (who preceded her in death in September 1966).  To this union were born seven children, two boys Bobby Hall and Vester Hall (who also preceded her in death when babies), and five girls, all of whom are still living. They are Shelba Jean Williamson (Epp) of Mt. Sterling, Ky; Hester Pugh (J.P.) Wellington, Ky; Eva Leigh Bradley of Jackson, Mi; Anna Faye Watts (James) of Mt. Sterling, Ky; Mary Jane Spencer Johnny) of Frenchburg, Ky; fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Two sisters survive; Draxie Hall of Columbus, Ohio and Nora Hall of Bevinsville, Ky. Five sisters and three brothers preceded her in death. Mommy was a member of the Salisbury Old Regular Baptist Church for about 49 years. When the church house burned, she when brought her membership to Mt. Sterling Old Regular Baptist Church. She loved to sing the songs of Zion. Mommy always helped all her children when she could. She would travel far and near to be with the ones who needed her whether she was able or not. She was a very independent person with the exception of depending on our Lord and Savior to help her along the way. It was hard on her when on November 22, 2000 she had a massive stroke, which left her paralyzed on the left side. She was completely helpless, and time and time again she would beg the Lord to take her home so she wouldn't have to lie and be waited on. She was so precious, and oh, how we miss you, Mommy. Our Thanksgivings and Christmases will never be the same. We love you Mommy.  Written by her broken-hearted children.

Hall, Earl- In loving memory of a wonderful husband and extraordinary dad Earl Hall. Dad was born on May 16, 1940 at Beaver. He was the son  of Elder Trip and Fronie Hall. Dad married my mother Anna Lee Hall on May 6, 1961. They were united in marriage for almost forty-one years before he passed away. Dad left behind six children who miss him. dearly. Wilma Jean Howell, Angie Lee Osborne, Earl Dean Hall, Archie

Lee Hall, Frona Lynn Hamilton, and Martha Ann Hall. He also left behind nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step grandchildren. Life will never be the same without the one man who made our family's lives go around. Dad was baptized into the old regular Baptist in June 1979. Dad was ordained as a deacon at the Samaria church in 1987. Dad was very headstrong in what he believed. He always told us that life is only what you make of it. He explained to us that death was something everyone ion the world would face. As we go thorough life we learn that change is what makes the world go around. On April 5, 2002 our family was hit with the most horrifying change ever, we lost our dad, and my mother lost part of her life. When Dad passed away he took part of my mom's heart with him. We depended on him for all our advice and we looked to him when. things got rough in life. Now all we have are the precious memories of our dad and a beloved husband.
