Back, Fred and Jane Rowe - were baptized at the same time by their grandson Clayton Montgomery and others in Magoffin County during their autumn years of life and in the presence of many of their friends and loved ones. They both took their membership with the Redeemed Church in Morgan County. Soon after going into the church Fred went on to his eternal home and Jane lingered on and lived among her family until a few weeks ago and then she followed on to meet the Lord. Both husband and wife lived to be well in their eighties. Both Fred and Jane were from two great pioneer families who settled in eastern Kentucky and both knew about the hardships and toils of rearing a large family in the hills of eastern Kentucky. Fred was the son of John and Lucy Ann Sutton Back. His father, John Back was the son of Isaac and Polly Boiling Back. Polly was from Wise County Virginia and is buried near Flat Gap, Virginia in a lonely grave near the old homestead. Jane's father was a well know and hard working man from Magoffin County. His name was Ben Rowe and her mother was an Arnett from a large generation of people. Fred and Jane's children are as follows: Estill, deceased; Martha Mae, Leslie, Ressie, Ethyl, Tressie, Ida and Bessie. Fred and Jane during their active years of life attended church often and always were more than willing Lo share their home with the church people by some of the finest foods available being served to all present and then their open fireplaces were havens of rest for the tired and weary pilgrims who sat in the glow of the burning wood and coal fires. Their comfortable beds we were made so welcome and inviting to all those present to rest from the burdens of the day which had just been made into history. Fred and Jane are now sleeping side by side in Breathitt County in the Dailey Roark Cemetery waiting for the trumpet of God to sound which will wake all nations of the dead.

Banks, George-I will try with a lonesome heart to write the obituary of Brother George Banks. He was the son of Haley Ison and Will Banks, was born on Smoot Creek at Van, Kentucky, October 11, 1888, passed from this life at the Whitesburg Hospital, June 27, 1975, being 86 years, 8 months and 16 days of age at his passing. George was married to Minnie Ison Banks in 1913 who preceded him in death in 1951. She was the daughter of Gid and Nancy Ison. To this union were born 16 children; 7 boys and 9 girls. Four daughters and three sons also preceded him in death. Those living are, Callie Niece of Van, Geraldine Adams and Irene Sizemore both of Premium, Pauline Cornett and Bobby Jean Miller of DuPont, Ind., Melvin Banks, Denver Banks and George Banks, Jr. all of Van, and Willard Banks of DuPont, Ind. One sister, Mary Moore of Whitesburg, 31 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his passing.

Banks, George and Minnie- had both joined the Old Regular Baptist Church the same time on May 21, 1951 and took their fellowship at the Little Colley Church and remained there as long as they lived. George was a strong believer in the faith of the Bible. He had his own request for his funeral written out and it was followed and carried out as close as could be. He wanted the good brothers to tell his children, grandchildren and great-grand children to not worry over him and to get ready to meet him and their mother where they won't have to be sick and suffer any more up there in Heaven. I know you all are lonesome children without Daddy or Momma but put all your faith in the same Lord they prayed to, so you all can meet them where you won't have to bid them farewell. "A vacant place is in your home A voice no more you will hear But by and by We hope to meet again over there."
Written by a sister and brother in Christ, Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Caudill

Then she will be satisfied

Brown, Angeline -entered eternal rest January 31, 1975 at 1:20 P.M. at Garden City Hospital, in Garden City, Michigan. She was born into this life February 26, 1904, to the late Tommy Adams and Susanna Cornett Adams, being 70 years, 11 months and 26 days of age at the time of her passing. With a sad heart I'll try to write the obituary of a dear sister in Christ, a good neighbor and a good Christian in our Little Kingdom Come Regular Baptist Church. She leaves a vacant seat and a lonesome home to her companion and children. She joined the Kingdom Come Church May 14, 1960 and remained a faithful member until death. Four sisters, Lola Brown of Millen, Ohio and Bertha Perry, Lizzie Nichols and Zola Gibson of Whitesburg, Kentucky, as well as a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. Five brothers and one son preceded her in death. I hope and pray the rest of her children and husband also will also turn to the same Lord and meet Mother where I believe with all my heart she is resting till the resurrection day where we can all be together to never part. Her oldest son, Eugene and his wife belongs to the same church that t Sister Angeline belonged to.
"Dear Mother you have left us
Here our loss we deeply feel
But tis God who has bereft us
He can all our sorrows heal
Yet again we hope to meet you
Where no farewell tears are shed."
Written by a Sister in the Church, Mrs. Arlie Caudill and all of Angeline's Loving Family

Collins, Virgie Warax-If you can find a truly goodwife, she is worth more than precious stones!  a woman of strength an dignity, and has no fear of old age. When she speaks her words are wise the kindness is the rule for everything she does. She watches carefully all that goes on throughout her household and is never lazy. Her children stand and bless her as does her husband. Charm can be deceptive and beauty doesn't last but a woman who fears and believes in God shall be greatly praised. Virgie Warrix Collins, the daughter of A.L. Sexton and Polly Ann Brown Sexton was born October 6, 1898 and departed this life on March 4, 1973 making her stay on earth 74 years 4 months and 29 days. Many and many of these years she spent in the services of the Lord. Many a time the writer has heard her sing: "I'll Win a White Robe." I feel that she has already been fitted for that robe and is now enjoying and only waiting  for thee redemption of this body to be resurrected from the grave to come on home. Many years ago she was married to William Warrix and he passed away and she later married Leander Collins.  She worked and strived in this life so that she could give the better things of this life to her children. She raised a fine family of children and taught them about the Great God of Heaven and stressed to them the need of them serving God. She has been privileged to hear the most of them say that they had fixed it up with  her God and were ready to go on home. She had been very sick for the last couple of years and was in and out of the hospital with pneumonia and she seemed better the day before she went but on Sunday March 4, 1973 her church time she quietly went on to see her loved ones. Many, many years ago she saw the need of a Saviour and called and He answered her and she became a member of the Little Samuel Memorial Regular Baptist Church in Lothair with her father, her brothers and sister and a daughter and other loved ones. She enjoyed her seat in the Church and loved to go and she will be missed but we feel our loss is Heaven's gain. She leaves to mourn her passing her companion -Leander Collins, four daughters: Mrs. Evelyn Caudill of Sandlick Creek, Mrs. Elma Banks of Wyandotte, Michigan, Mrs. Mabel Morse of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Mrs. Wilma Slone of Hindman, three sons: Van Warax of Lexington, A.L. Halcomb of Monroe Falls, Ohio, James E. Halcomb of Tiffin, Ohio; three sisters: Mrs. Bonnie Snell, Mrs. Ruth Jones, Mrs. Helen Combs and five brothers: John Sexton, William Sexton, Kerney Sexton, George Monroe Sexton, and Lawrence Sexton. 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren besides a host of friends and relation:, So sleep on Sister Virgie and we hope to see you in that land of peace and joy and be there forever.

Combs, Denver-With much sadness I will attempt to write the obituary of a true friend and my Dad, Denver Combs. Born at Hyden, Kentucky on January 31, 1916 to John and Viola Combs, Dad spent his early boyhood days at Combs, Kentucky. On the 23rd of October, 1937, he met and married Martha Feltner from Browns Fork, Kentucky. For both, this was a happy marriage. For all his life, Dad was a hard working man. All the years I spent growing up my Dad was a machine man at Meems Haskins Coal Company at Kodak, Kentucky on Montgomery Creek. Dad was always a quiet man, asking little of life and he was always grateful for any blessings his God saw fit to give him. I remember as a small boy seeing my Dad and Mom being baptized in the river at Lothair, Kentucky. Many of those who stood there with me and watched and shed tears of gladness are gone. God bless each of them. Life was good to Dad, and he said so many times. He left a family who loved him so deeply and friends who respected him to go home to a God who I know did reward him. Dad departed this life on November 24, 1973. More than memories, he left his Bible. On the worn pages are notes, references, and his understandings written in his very definite way. "When I walk through the gates of this city And I see large crowds gathered there Standing off to the side almost unnoticed Will be Dad. My Dad will be there!"
By his son, Bobby Combs

Cornett,  Kenton -was born March 30, 1884, passed from this life on March 3, 1975, making his stay on earth 90 years, 11 months and 3 days. He was the son of the late William and Sara (Eversole) Cornett of Gordon, Kentucky. On May 9, 1911 he was married to Judia Roark, who preceded him in death on July 22, 1953. To this union was born 7 children, 3 girls and 4 boys, one girl died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his passing six children, Delma Cornett, Blackey, Kentucky; Otis Cornett, Bellevue, Kentucky; Earlis Cornett, Roxana, Kentucky; Juanita Smith, Coldspirng, Kentucky; Kermit Cornett, Coldspring, Kentucky; Eugene Cornett, Coldspring, Kentucky. 24 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Also one brother, Green Cornett, Cumberland, Kentucky and one sister, Nancy Bradley of Gordon, Kentucky. And a host of other relatives and friends. He joined The West Chester Regular Baptist Church on March 5, 1967 at the age of 83. He lived a faithful Christian Life until death, he loved the church dearly and filled his seat when able. "Always showing forth signs of the binding and solemn agreement made when the Lord saved him (and signs of the Promise), Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.  Elder Otis Cornett

Frazier, James F.-Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. 'He cometh forth as a flower and is cut down. He fleeth as a shadow and where is he? James F. Frazier was son of J. H. Frazier and Cinda Frazier and was born December 26, 1890. Jimmy as he was known lived all of his life in and around Whitesburg, Kentucky. He went away to school and during World War II he was away working for a while but the most of his life was spent here. During his life he watched where he invested his money and worked at different jobs and invested his money very carefully and let it work for him and in his latter years he was able to take life easy. He was often seen on the streets and during the summers he took in many of a memorial "meeting" and enjoyed laughing, talking and getting acquainted with the people at these meetings. The writer talked to him on different occasions about how it was between him and the Lord and he said that he had prayed and the Lord had forgiven him and there was nothing in his way. That he felt like he was going to rest when the call came. Before he became sick and while he was out and around he contributed a lot of money to the different churches and we of the Thornton Union Association were very happy to receive what he gave us and it let us do some things to our churches that we might not have been able to do without this help. Also when he passed on to his reward he left the Regular Baptist Churches a good donation to spend as they saw fit. He will be missed by his friends and he not only helped the churches but Alice Lloyd College was the recipient of a good donation to help make it easier for our children to go to school and better themselves in this life. Written by one of his friend, Elder Raymond Collins

Halcomb, Lee and Wife, Jane Campbell Halcomb-Lee was the son of Elinza Halcomb and Rabitha Lewis Halcomb. He was born December 1, 1890 and died March 3, 1951. He was a good citizen but never joined any church. Jane was born August 11, 1893 and died January 31, 1975. To this union was born one son, Kermit of Cornettsville, Kentucky and also surviving are five grandchildren. Jane was sick for quite a while and joined the Big Leatherwood Regular Baptist Church while in the hospital. She told Elders J. W. Pratt and Dixie Ison her experience and at that time she said as soon as she got back home she would be baptized. So she went home for just a few days and got worse again and was taken back to the hospital and while there she began to beg her folks to take her home so she could be baptized. We called Brother Pratt and Brother Ison to the hospital again and with the help of two nurses baptized her in a large bathtub, and from that time on she was perfectly satisfied and would tell people she had been baptized. We don't worry about her, we believe her soul is resting in the Paradise of God, waiting for the redemption of the body.

Holbrook, Emily Patrick -daughter of Mart and Kate Farris Patrick was born at Seitz, Kentucky December 17, 1880, died January 9, 1975 at her home in Salyersville, Kentucky. At the time of death she was 94 years and 23 days. Emily was married to B.F. Holbrook April 30, 1900 and to this union twelve children were born and eleven children grew to be adults. The children are Faith, Price and Howard deceased. Goldie Prater, Audrey Vanderpool, Rebecca Arnett, Loretta Spurlock, Grace Henry, and Louise Hoskins, Patrick Holbrook, and Bruce Holbrook all of Salyersville still survive. Also surviving is one brother Tone Patrick and one sister Winnie Back Patrick both of the state of Texas. About the year 1900 she received a hope in Christ that did not fade even in the dark hours of death. She was baptized at the hands of Elder Calloway Cooper and was the last person to go that had been baptized by Elder Cooper. In 1936 she removed her membership from the Bethlehem Church in Breathitt County to the Redeemed Church in Morgan County. The last visit that she made to her home church at Caney she had to be carried from the car into the church like a child in the arms of one of the members of her family. She always begged for church and prayer in her home as long as she lived. Emily's happiest hours were when her children and grandchildren were near and she gave them good advice until the end of life. Her funeral was preached by her nephew Wardie Craft on the subject of "Her sun went down while it was still day." She now sleeps on a small family cemetery beside her husband and members of her family who have gone on near the town of Salyersville. Aunt Emily's good advice still rings in the memory of her loved ones like the mysterious sound of bells toned with voices that comes only from a heavenly country. Her children, grandchildren, and loved ones know if they ever join her again they must repent, believe, and be born again in order to enter that heavenly home and live with Jesus and all the redeemed by grace while ages roll on and on and on.

Jacobs, Dan -was born March 11, 1896, the son of Bill and Bloomey Gibson Jacobs. He departed this life on October 18, 1974. He was seventy eight years old at his passing. He is survived by his wife, Missouri Slone Jacobs, whom he married January 10, 1918. To this union was born five daughters and seven sons. The daughters were Martha Delores of St. Petersburg, Florida; Girty of Indianapolis, Indiana; Anna Rose of Muncie, Indiana; Mary Katherine, a grand-daughter whom he raised as his own, of Sheridan, Indiana and Vivian who preceded him in death. The sons were Russell of Stanville, Ky.; Ernest, Thurman, Bill and Gary all of Indianapolis, Indiana; James of Valdosta, Georgia and Gaylen of Thomasville, Georgia. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Brother Dan first joined the Locust Grave Church of United Baptist of the Paint Union Association and was baptized by Elders John Brown and Thurman Ferguson about forty five years ago. He came to the Regular Baptist in 1951 was baptized by his son Russell and a minister the Old Stone Coal Church. When we begin to analyze the life of Elder Dan Jacobs we see evidence that the Holy Spirit worked effectively in his early years caused and enabled him to repent of his sins and believe In Jesus Christ. We look further at his life and we see other evidence of things that accompany salvation; A spiritual mind, a divine nature, a sorrow for and a hatred of sin, a godly fear or obedience, a righteous life, humility, prayer, love, charity, perseverance, and the peace of God. Brother Dan was personified in this scripture, John 3:36 "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life." Here was an individual with a sweet profession of faith - that was called to the highest vocation on this earth - the ministry. He was faithful to his calling and to his Church and to his brothers and sisters but loved his fellow man. In Proverbs 4:18, "But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day". Brother Dan has attained that perfect day. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
